The massive success of the refurbished McManus galleries since it reopened a month ago demonstrates how popular the planned offshoot of the V&A in Dundee would be, it was claimed this week.
Over 31,000 people have visited the McManus since it opened its doors again at the end of February after a £12 million refurbishment programme that took three years to complete.
Dundee City Council leisure and arts convener Councillor Bob Duncan said the popularity of the redeveloped art gallery and museum had exceeded expectations.
“I am absolutely over the moon it is just fantastic,” he said.
“It is not just the numbers of visitors, but the enthusiasm for the building they have shown.
“I think it is probably doing a wee bit better than expected and it bodes fantastically well for the V&A.
“It is a Dundee institution that we have been missing for so long, so people are glad to see it back.”
A wide-ranging programme of activities will take place at the museum next month. They include artist-led workshops, guided tours and talks.
