Council and police to discuss response to Dundee Traveller camps
ByThe Courier Reporter
City council chiefs and police officers are to gather round the table in a bid to find a solution to Dundee’s problems with unofficial Traveller camps.
Since January last year, the city has played host to at least 26 encampments with the cost to clean them up later running to tens of thousands of pounds.
Despite that, city councillors have admitted things are no further forward in finding a solution.
Councillor Jimmy Black said: “There needs to be an approach that is flexible enough to deal with alternative lifestyles of Travellers that, at the same time, ensures they contribute their fair share to society.
“I think that we need to take the initiative from the Scottish Government and make it work for Dundee.”
His administration colleague, Councillor John Alexander whose housing remit includes responsibility for Travellers said “nothing was off the table” when it came to dealing with the issue.
The news came as the latest illegal camp sprung up in Mid Craigie Road off the Kingsway.
