Up to 1500 Dundee trade unionists are to vent their anger at looming public spending cuts in a mass demonstration in Edinburgh this month.
Unison Tayside regional officer Rory Malone said up to 1500 union members from Dundee were expected to travel to the capital on October 23.
The There Is A Better Way event is to be the focal point for Scottish protests against the swingeing cuts to be made by the ruling coalition at Westminster.
The Tory-Lib Dem government will set out their austerity measures in the comprehensive spending review on October 20 as they try to tackle the country’s huge deficit.
The joint trade unions believe the government’s fiscal strategy is wrong and are planning mass action to put their point across.
Mr Malone said the number of people heading to the protest from Dundee alone showed the strength of feeling amongst ordinary workers about the looming budget cuts.
He said, “It is a bigger picture that is building up. A contract was agreed by the public sector and private sector unions at the TUC conference to pool all our efforts to oppose cuts and the attacks on pensions and pay.
“There is an alternative to these proposed cuts. It is a lie from the Con-Dem government to say this is the only way forward.
“It is a very worrying time and people are really concerned about what tomorrow is going to hold for them financially.”
