But ‘n’ ben injects some Broons charm at McManus Galleries

An almost life-size model of The Broons family’s but ‘n’ ben is charming visitors to the McManus art gallery and museum in Dundee this month.
In keeping with the cartoon family’s usual residence in newsprint, the model is made entirely from papers produced by Courier and Sunday Post publisher D.C. Thomson & Co Ltd.
The work, entitled Our House, is the inspiration of Dundee-born artist Debbie Lawson, who has also created an accompanying carpet flower sculpture called The Bairn’s Flowerbed.
The works are part of the Nine Trades of Dundee art project run by the exhibitions department at Duncan of Jordanstone.
The project provides connections between art and traditional workplaces and commissioned a number of artists who have “day jobs” to produce appropriate works.
Though trained as a sculptor, Debbie is also a journalist for a national Sunday newspaper.
“I’ve really enjoyed the project and reacquainting myself with the city,” she said.
