Dundee car vandalism causes outrage

Vandals provoked outrage at the weekend after damaging 70 vehicles in the Stobswell area of Dundee, causing tens of thousands of pounds of damage.

Cars parked in Baxter Park Terrace, Wortley Place and Pitkerro Road were scratched by vandals between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

It is the second time in two weeks vehicles in the neighbourhood have been vandalised, with Inspector David Scott saying the police are to step up their presence in the area.

“This was an absolutely mindless incident with utter disregard for the residents’ propertytheir pride and joy,” he said.

“The vehicles were scratched with some form of instrument from bonnet to bootit is shocking.

“This is unacceptable and we will be keeping extra foot patrols for the foreseeable future.”

Councillor Ken Lynn, who lives on Baxter Park Terrace, said he wants to call a meeting of residents to thrash out a solution to the problem.

A number of cars in the area were scratched two weekends ago and Mr Lynn said urgent action has to be taken.

“What I’m planning to do is organise a public meeting as soon as possible,” he said.

“Obviously, it is very difficult for the police to be there all the time and be there for the 10 minutes when something like this happens.”

“I’ve lived here for eight years and apart from a few individual incidents there hasn’t really been anything, then you get two in two weeks.

Mr Lynn said all avenues should be explored to stop youngsters congregating and drinking alcohol in the park and then causing trouble.

“The police said to me they confiscated 19 litres of cider from teenagers in the park recently,” he added.

“They aren’t stealing this from their parents’ cupboards, they have to be getting drink from unscrupulous off licences.

“It’s such a hard one to police, but I thought about the idea of a neighbourhood watch, where everybody takes a turn just sitting watching what’s going on through the window.

“I think it is my responsibility to get people in the area to come up with anything that could help stop this.

“Locking the gates to the park is maybe something we need to look at again, although I know it is a contentious subject.

“I know lots of people walk their dogs through the park at night, but I think we have to look at every possibility just now.

“This can’t go on. I’m outraged and just wish I had been looking out the window at the right time.”

One resident who had his car scratched, Martin Vyleta, said any scheme set up would not be able to stop the yobs.

Mr Vyleta, who estimates the damage to his car at about £500, said, “I was quite shocked when I saw it, but what can you expect when there are so many teenagers hanging about?

“This street is usually okay, but in Park Avenue they are throwing bins at cars and that sort of thing. It’s a nightmare.

“I just don’t know what you can do. Even if you put cameras out for 24 hours a day they are too young to put in jail.”

Another Baxter Park Terrace resident, Karen Sandeman, said, “It seems to have happened all down the street.

“When I took my dog for a walk in the park a lot of people were speaking about it.

“I would definitely go to the meeting and take it from there.”

Anyone with any information about the incident, or who saw anyone acting suspiciously around vehicles in these areas, can contact the police on 0300 111 2222 or speak to any officer.
