Offenders carrying out community service helped to clear snow from more than 70 locations across Dundee during the recent cold snap.
Around 300 community sentences are handed down by Dundee courts each year and there was an 8% increase in the number of offenders completing unpaid work across the city last year.
Dundee City Council’s social work and health committee will hear on Monday how changes to community service legislation will affect the city.
Convener Jim Barrie said, “Scottish Government reports have pointed to the need for a credible system of community sentences which could be better understood by local communities, could respond to their needs and delivered to offenders swiftly.
“Legislation has been updated and will come into force next month, with probation, community service and supervised attendance orders being replaced with a new streamlined community payback order.”
He added, “The snow-clearing operations that have been carried out by offenders in Dundee at places such as sheltered housing, community lounges and homes are an example of an excellent use of community sentences that meet with the requirements of the new legislation.
“People have told us how pleased they have been to have these areas attended to during the severe weather we have been experiencing.”
