Councillors have agreed that a review of the school estate in Dundee should be carried out.
This is being done to achieve “a complete picture of how we can provide the best possible educational facilities for the children of Dundee.”
No specific timescale has been set, but the city’s director of education has been instructed to bring back a report on all schools and nurseries “as soon as it is practically possible to do so”.
This is hoped to be by the end of the year.
The move was proposed by education convener Liz Fordyce as Ferry councillor Laurie Bidwell tried to persuade councillors to back a feasibility study into extending Barnhill Primary.
Mr Bidwell said the school needed to expand to cope with growing demand for places, pointing out that up to 700 new homes could be built in its catchment area.
He added that the council’s capital plan contained a notional £5 million for such an extension, but no timetable for the work had been set.
The education convener said, “We are 29 councillors elected to represent all eight wards in Dundee. That means we should look at every school and nursery in the city and not just concentrate on a single unit.”
She explained that the review would look at the condition, suitability and sufficiency of all schools, taking into account the implications of housing developments.
Mr Bidwell said he believed the administration had put up a “wrecking motion”, but the whole-city review easily won when put to the vote.
