Chef Stephen Collinson applies to open restaurant in Broughty Ferry

An award-winning chef is hoping to open a restaurant in Broughty Ferry, creating six jobs.

Stephen Collinson has lodged a planning application with Dundee City Council for premises at the corner of Brown Street and Long Lane.

Originally from Yorkshire, he has worked in various kitchens across Tayside, include the Huntingtower Hotel in Perth and the Carriage Room in Arbroath. He also owned and ran 11 Park Avenue in Carnoustie, which won two rosettes from the AA and was highly recommended in the Michelin Red Guide. He now runs the restaurant and dining room at Carnoustie Caledonia Golf Club.

A consultant’s report accompanying the application explains that Mr Collinson has been looking for suitable premises in the Ferry for some time. He has an agreement to lease the property now occupied by offices for a minimum of 10 years.

The report says, “He has a reputation of preparing locally sourced products and promoting local food suppliers. My client has a very strong and faithful clientele who have supported his ventures throughout Tayside for many years.”

The restaurant would operate between 11am and 11pm six days a week serving lunch and dinner, with a maximum of 40 customers at a time. There would be no carry-out service.

The report adds, “At present Broughty Ferry is served by numerous ethnic restaurants and the addition of a restaurant of this standard will only be positive for the local community and beyond.

“Due to the type of business we believe that its operation would not be detrimental to the environmental quality of residents within close proximity.”

Mr Collinson is said to be willing to “invest in a quality kitchen extraction system to ensure that there is no undue pollution from cooking smells.”

The council has sent out notifications of the planning application to near neighbours. This includes several residential properties and businesses.
