Man sought over Lochee Harp referee ‘threat’

A grey-haired man with glasses is being sought by police in Dundee over a junior football match in the city that the referee abandoned after apparently being threatened by someone standing on the sidelines.

Kenny Beats halted the East Region North Division encounter between North End and Lochee Harp 10 minutes before full-time on April 2.

Harp were leading 2-1 when Mr Beats showed a second yellow card to their Mark Kelly, reducing the visitors to 10 men.

It is understood comments were then exchanged between people at or near the Harp bench and Mr Beats, after which he blew his whistle for the game to end and marched off the pitch.

He said he had ended the game on safety grounds, as people had shouted at him from the sidelines and he felt threatened. The matter was later reported to the police.

A spokeswoman for the force said, “Inquiries are continuing into the incident at North End Park. The incident took place after a member of the Lochee Harp team was sent off.

“A man aged in his 60s with grey hair and wearing glasses is believed to have shouted at the referee and threatened him.

“A number of people who were at the game, including players and team officials, have been spoken to and inquiries are continuing to trace the man believed responsible.”

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222.
