The cost of moving Eastern Primary School in Broughty Ferry into the Grove Academy building has rocketed by £300,000.
The transfer which was initially expected to cost around £1.61 million has now risen to a cost of more than £1.9m, the city’s education committee will hear on Monday.
In a report education director Jim Collins says improvements to heating systems, refurbishment of windows and new floor coverings are responsible for the unexpected increase in costs.
It’s being met from the education department’s capital budget but comes at a time when school budgets across the city have been slashed.
More than £4m was taken out of the schools’ pot this year as education felt the full force of the council’s need to make savings.
As a result, a number of senior posts and deputy heads will be removed from city secondaries, while pupils will now be moved across Dundee to take lessons as part of a “city campus”.
Meanwhile, a number of road safety measures costing £50,000 are being put in place for the reopening of Eastern Primary at its new location following the summer holiday.
Actions being taken on roads around the school include dropped kerb and “slow” markings, signs and skid-resistant road surfacing.
On the west side of Church Street there will be limited waiting, while the narrow section of Seafield Road will become one-way.
Lollipop people are also being provided at five locations and a travel plan will be developed for the new primary location and Grove Academy.
Education convener Liz Fordyce said, “We are making every effort to ensure a range of safety measures are in place for Eastern Primary moving into its new accommodation.
“Eastern will also be covered by the council’s successful Don’t Park Here campaign to discourage selfish school-run motorists from parking near the gates.
“The project board, which was set up to consider issues around the move of Eastern, looked at road safety thoroughly.”
Pupils will start their first day at the new building on Thursday, August 18.
