Members of a Dundee community remain hopeful that a campaign for a safe road crossing can still prove successful.
Residents of Baxter Park Terrace have been given new hope that a crossing may be installed on Pitkerro Road, after Dundee City Council identified the route as a site for safety improvements.
Members of the local authority’s city development committee will hear at a meeting tonight that the busy road has been earmarked for intervention measures following complaints from residents that cars were travelling too fast.
The council’s decision to identify the road, along with 11 others in Dundee, comes after the Maryfield Regeneration Forum narrowly voted against plans to install a crossing on the road last month.
Commenting on the council’s decision to identify the route for safety improvements, local resident Lisa Campbell told The Courier she remained confident that the council would act on the wishes of campaigners.
She said, “More people are behind the crossing than ever and that includes schools, parents, PTAs and residents. It just shows what people power can achieve. Hopefully the council will take this on board at their meeting.”
The decision of the Maryfield Regeneration Forum to reject the proposed pedestrian crossing clearly angered campaigners who had been operating a campaign in recent months to have a safe walkway installed on the route.
As well as collecting 280 signatures through an online petition, Mrs Campbell and her husband placed large signs on their property urging motorists approaching nearby Morgan Academy to slow down.
Praising the council for highlighting Pitkerro Road, she added, “We’ve got lots of posters and we have people stopping on the street and motorists slowing down to see what’s going on.
“The council have been great on this, particularly the transport department and Neil Gellatly, who is the head there. That is very encouraging, and the community support hasn’t died either.”
