Residents near Dundee Airport are faced with another week of late-night noise after it emerged the contractors resurfacing its runway have fallen behind schedule.
West End councillor Fraser Macpherson has received complaints from homeowners as far away as Blackness Road and Glamis Road who are unhappy about the din of heavy machinery.
The resurfacing is part of a £1.7 million upgrade to improve the runway apron and taxiways.
Due to the airport’s time-critical constraints, the work has had to be carried out at night when there are no commercial flights.
Airport manager Derrick Lang says the upgrade is “fundamental to the future of airport.”
The project is 5% complete but, due to bad weather and mechanical issues, the contractors are behind schedule.
Work is now expected to continue throughout this week. The rest of the work will be carried out at the far end of the runway, towards Invergowrie, and, depending on which way the wind is blowing, it is hoped the sound will be less prominent.
Workers were given last weekend off so the current stage of the project is expected to finish on Friday.
A Glamis Road resident, who asked not to be named, said she hears the heavy machinery during the night but did not know where it was coming from.
Mr Macpherson, who raised noise concerns with airport bosses last week, said he had been approached by a number of people.
He said, “I am advised that the actual runway resurfacing works should be complete by this coming Friday and the civil work that will thereafter run for another week should not produce any noise so hopefully an end to this is firmly in sight.”
Work on the main surfacing is estimated to take 20 nights, with an expected completion date of mid-August.
