A new charitable trust, Leisure and Culture Dundee, has officially taken over the running of some of the city’s top attractions, including the McManus Galleries and the Caird Hall.
It will operate as a Scottish charitable incorporated organisation (SCIO), a new legal form that has just become available.
It creates a legal entity that is able to enter into contracts, employ staff and own property, while providing charity trustees with protection against personal liability.
A Dundee City Council spokesman said, “Following a review of the city council’s organisational structure, it was agreed to establish a Scottish charitable incorporated organisation to manage what were the local authority’s leisure and cultural services in Dundee.
“Leisure and Culture Dundee came into being to operate these functions. The new SCIO is working in partnership with Dundee City Council at facilities including the McManus Galleries, city libraries, the Olympia, DISC and the Caird Hall.”
The spokesman added, “It is estimated that Leisure and Culture Dundee will save the council around £1 million in annual non-domestic rates and other expenditure when compared to the situation if the council had continued to run these facilities directly.”
Leisure and Culture Dundee will be overseen by a board of 13 trustees.
