A councillor has appealed for witnesses to the assault of a 66-year-old man in Dundee to contact police.
Fraser Macpherson, Liberal Democrat member for the West End ward, condemned the ”mindless thug” who carried out the attack, leaving his victim needing hospital treatment for a broken jaw and cuts to his face.
The incident happened in Nethergate shortly after midnight on Monday outside the Nether Inn. Witnesses said the attacker was carrying a weapon of some kind.
His victim was treated at the scene by paramedics before an ambulance took him to Ninewells Hospital.
Mr Macpherson said: ”I am shocked that this man has been attacked in the Nethergate and I do hope he is making a full and speedy recovery from what must have been a frightening experience.
”It is vitally important that the culprit is caught as soon as possible and I urge anyone who was in the vicinity of the Nether Inn around the time to contact the police if they saw anything suspicious.”
Officers have begun looking at CCTV recordings to try to piece together what happened.
Detective Inspector Bobby Dow said: ”The reason for this is yet to be ascertained but obviously it is an attack on a relatively elderly man.
”Some witnesses have already come forward and we thank them for that, but would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time to get in contact.”
The attacker is described as being around 6ft with stubble. He wore a dark jacket with a grey hood.
Anyone who witnessed the incident should contact police on 0300 111 2222.
