The Tay Rail Bridge was closed for an hour on Tuesday morning after a lorry smashed into it.
One of the girders had a chunk ripped from it after the articulated vehicle, which was carrying goods for value store Poundland, collided with the underside of the bridge shortly after 7am.
The driver telephoned police to make them aware of the crash.
Officers attended the scene alongside Network Rail engineers and the bridge was closed to trains while a damage assessment was carried out. Services between Dundee and Edinburgh were disrupted during the period of closure.
Around 100 yards of one lane of Riverside Drive’s eastbound route into Dundee city centre was coned off for almost two hours as commuters made their way in.
The lorry driver said he had hit the bottom of the bridge after switching lanes to avoid roadworks.
The bridge was reopened to trains after around an hour, with Network Rail deciding no serious damage had been suffered.
A spokesman for the company said: ”The collision was reported to us at 7.18am. Structural engineers carried out an inspection and the bridge was reopened at 8.18am.
”The bridge only suffered superficial damage and was opened again quickly.”
An incident on the Tay Road Bridge caused significant delays for motorists on Tuesday evening.
Both carriageways on the bridge were closed and long queues built up on both sides of the river shortly after the incident began at about 4.10pm as police were called to the scene.
After around an hour the situation was resolved by police and routes were reopened to traffic.
