Dundee is about to enjoy a property boom in board game form.
The makers of Monopoly have confirmed that the city has been chosen to have its very own customised version of the family favourite.
Exactly which landmarks will appear in the game has yet to be decided and Dundonians will be given the chance to make suggestions to manufacturers Winning Moves before the design is finalised.
Dundee beat off 10 other Scottish cities and towns to win the honour, including the shortlisted Perth and Stirling.
The formal announcement is being today at City Chambers but Lord Provost John Letford is already hoping the game will help to further raise Dundee’s profile.
He said: ”We are delighted that Dundee is to get its own version of Monopoly and I am sure there will be an enthusiastic response to the call to nominate local landmarks for the game.
”Through regeneration projects, our city has developed and changed over the years. There will be some very interesting suggestions for landmarks reflecting the city’s proud past and the future that is now being built.”
The original game was based on London streets and places and a comparison of the two cities does suggest some obvious examples where Dundee locations could easily be slotted in as replacements.
Trafalgar Square could become City Square, the shopping mecca that is Oxford Street could be turned into Murraygate and Kings Cross Station could give way to Tay Bridge Station.
And, of course, the historic newspaper home of Fleet Street could be transformed into Kingsway East, where The Courier is published.
But what other parts of the Dundee might be immortalised? Discovery Point, the Hilltown, Victoria Dock, Dens Park or Tannadice, the Law?
Mark Hauser, licensing director at Winning Moves, is keen to get on with turning the concept into a finished game.
He said: ”We are delighted to be making this exciting announcement that Dundee is Passing Go. To have come ahead of 10 other cities and towns across the whole Scotland is a magnificent achievement.
”We were particularly impressed with Dundee’s great landmarks historic, heritage and contemporary.”
The game should be on shop shelves in time for Christmas, with special Dundee-themed community chest and chance cards too.
It will join a host of other special editions of the game, some featuring cities such as Edinburgh, York and Cardiff and other based on football clubs such as Manchester United or TV programmes including Only Fools And Horses. There is even a London Olympics edition.
A page will be set up on Facebook to allow people to suggest landmarks for inclusion in the Dundee game over the next three weeks including which place should replace Mayfair, the most expensive and exclusive site on the board.Which Dundee landmarks do you think should be included?
