Dundee drivers faced their first day of disruption on Tuesday as major works began on Greendykes Road.
The route from the Scott Fyffe circle to Broughty Ferry Road will be closed southbound for six weeks.
The large scale roadworks will create a new lane, allowing city-bound drivers on Broughty Ferry Road to turn right into Greendykes Road.
The southbound junction and the traffic lights, which will be switched off during the works, will be disrupted.
Drivers should follow diversions via Craigie Avenue and Broughty Ferry Road, though this may not be suitable for abnormal vehicles.
Traffic management bollards and signs were put in place before the road was closed, and a council spokesman said: ”We will be keeping a close eye on it to see how it’s working.”
Councillor Will Dawson, convener of the city development committee, said: ”Anything to do with upgrading a junction is going to cause problems and it is a major junction.
”We hope it won’t take the full six weeks but we want people to bear with it because it will be a much improved set of junctions.
”It’s just one of those things. People in Dundee have been putting up with roadworks for a while but it is work that needs to be done.
”Bear with us and we hope to have the work done in under the six weeks.”
Sergeant Wilson Gove of the Tayside road policing unit advised drivers to be patient and try to find alternative routes.
The work is being carried out by Carillion on behalf of the council.
