The use of CCTV by Dundee taxi drivers has been encouraged by leading figures in the local industry.
Graeme Stephen, chairman of Dundee Taxi Association, and Chris Elder, Unite taxi branch secretary, believe installing cameras in city cabs is an ideal way of keeping drivers safe on the job.
The backing comes as taxi operators in Edinburgh request the option to install CCTV in cabs across the capital after proposals were put forward by a partnership representing operators there.
The cost of installation is met by the driver and those in Dundee have paid in the region of £700 to have their systems put in place.
Footage is accessible only by relevant authorities Tayside Police and Dundee City Council with passengers being made aware that they are being recorded.
Mr Elder said: ”What I have noticed is that a lot of people associated with drugs and crime will walk past a taxi with CCTV. I also know that there have been a few accusations made by passengers against drivers and at least the driver has the evidence to back up what is said.
”I would certainly encourage drivers to install it. I think a lot of female passengers feel a lot safer in taxis with CCTV we’ve certainly had good feedback from the public.”
