Police have confirmed that the death of 50-year-old John McMurchie in Dundee is being treated as murder.
Officers have also said that a 63-year-old man who was initially arrested as a part of the investigation has subsequently been released without charge.
Mr McMurchie, a father of five from Errol, was found seriously injured in Fintry Terrace, near its junction with Whitfield Drive at about 4am on Sunday.
Emergency services attended, but despite their best efforts to save him Mr McMurchie was pronounced dead at Ninewells Hospital a short time later.
His family, who asked to be left to grieve in private, paid tribute to a man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Issuing a statement through Tayside Police, they said: ”As a husband, brother, father to five and grandfather to two, as well as an uncle, John was loving and very much-loved by all of his family.
”No words can express the loss that we feel at him being taken from us so suddenly.”
A police spokesman said: “Investigations continue in the area where Mr McMurchie was discovered, as well as at an address in Murrayfield Gardens, which is of interest to the enquiry team. House-to-house enquiries are being undertaken, along with a review of public and private CCTV. “Tayside Police wants to speak with anyone who was in the area of Fintry Terrace, Whitfield Drive and Murrayfield Gardens between 3.30am when Mr McMurchie left an address in Murrayfield Gardens and about 4am when he was found seriously injured in Fintry Terrace.
“That includes people making their way home after a night out or from work those out late at night walking the dog, or taxi drivers dropping off fares.”
Officers are also asking people or businesses with CCTV systems to share any footage that may be of interest to the murder hunt.
