Residents had to be evacuated from their homes as firefighters dealt with a serious blaze in a fish and chip shop in Dundee in the early hours of this morning.

The emergency services were called to Victors Fish Bar on Blackness Road at around 2.15am in response to an alarm.

They found the premises on fire and quickly cordoned off the area.

A police spokesman said: “Some local residents required to be evacuated and have been provided with temporary accommodation by Dundee City Council until such times as it is safe to return.

“Diversions are currently in place and will remain so until such times as the area is confirmed as safe.”

The emergency services are still on the scene but it is not believed that there are any injuries.

One local posted on Twitter: “Roof and flats(?!) on fire next door. Wouldn’t have known this if the policeman did not kick me out of my own place. My hero!”

Chief Inspector Sandy Brodie said: “This is very much a co-ordinated team approach with staff from the police, fire and local authority all working together to ensure the safety of the public and protect property as far as reasonably practicable.

“The cordons are likely to remain in place until such times as investigations are complete and it is deemed safe for members of the public to return to the area.

“I would like to take this opportunity in advance to thank members of the public for their patience during this period.”

He added: “At the moment we will retain an open mind about the potential cause of the fire. As in every case of a fire of this nature a joint investigation will take place to try and establish how the fire started.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0300 111 2222.
