A 49-year-old man was taken to Ninewells Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation from a fire in his Lochee multi-storey flat on Thursday night.
He is understood to have fallen asleep while food was cooking in the kitchen of his seventh-floor home at Burnside Court.
He was woken just after 10pm by his smoke alarm sounding and found his kitchen filled with smoke.
Firefighters quickly controlled the outbreak and led him to a waiting paramedic who gave him oxygen. After an examination it was decided to take him to Ninewells Hospital as a precaution.
Connor Kennan (20), the tenant of the flat immediately above, said: ”I looked out my window and saw fire engines outside and smoke coming from the flat below me.”
Fire service station manager Scott Symon said the casualty was able to walk to the paramedic’s vehicle and he was taken to hospital to ensure he had not suffered serious injury.
He added: ”The kitchen is smoke-logged but it should clear. There was food on the cooker which went on fire and we don’t yet know why this was allowed to happen. We will have to wait to speak to the householder.
”The smoke alarm did its job and made the householder aware of the outbreak in the kitchen, so this shows the value of smoke alarms.”
He said an aerial platform was despatched in case there was a need to tackle the blaze in the 15-storey building from outside, but the 17-strong team was able to deal with the fire from the inside. It proved to be a busy night for the emergency services as they were later called to deal with a major blaze in Blackness Road.
