The man leading the hunt for John McMurchie’s killer says he is determined to bring the culprit to justice.
DI Bobby Dow said the murder inquiry now involves more than 50 police officers and specialists from across Tayside, combing the Whitfield area of Dundee for evidence.
His words came as it was confirmed that the father-of-five from Errol died of a single stab wound to the heart.
Fifty-year-old Mr McMurchie was found by two passers-by as he lay fatally injured in Dundee’s Fintry Terrace at 4am on Sunday August 12.
The car showroom night watchman had been drinking with friends in pubs in the Fintry and Stobswell areas on the Saturday night before heading to a house in Murrayfield Gardens.
He left that house some time between 3.30am and 4am and was then found on nearby Fintry Terrace at 4am.
The cause of death noted on Mr McMurchie’s death certificate states he died of a ”single stab wound to heart”.
Nearly two weeks since the death the Fintry and upper Whitfield areas are continuing to be combed for clues, while a house on Murrayfield Gardens will remain sealed off until lab results come back.
DI Dow said: ”The inquiry team has in excess of 20 searchers, which goes up to 30 when you include the forensic team. We also have over 20 people working as part of the inquiry team and in support functions, so over 50 in total.
”We will use whoever is available and is best placed to do certain jobs across the whole force area, not just Dundee. We are very determined to bring whoever did this to justice.”
Search teams have been seen in the areas around St Matthew’s Church and on rooftops in Whitfield as part of the hunt for evidence that could bring Mr McMurchie’s killer to justice.
A reward has been offered by the Crimestoppers charity for information and detectives have asked residents in the area of the killing to scour their gardens for unusual items.
DI Dow added: ”The investigation is wide-ranging, from interviewing members of the public to reviewing CCTV footage and conducting house-to-house and forensic activities.
”This is a 50-year-old loving dad who has suffered a fatal injury in a public street. It would have been a traumatic attack for him.”
