A stunning illustration of a friend ripping through a sheet of paper has captured the top prize at this year’s McIntosh Patrick School Awards in Dundee.
Former St Paul’s Academy pupil Hayley Stephen’s work was hailed by judges in the event, which aims to encourage talent and celebrate the life of great local artist James McIntosh Patrick.
Hayley (17) was not at the McManus galleries to receive her prize as she is on holiday, but St Paul’s principal art teacher Shauna McHugh, who took her place, said: ”She is an exceptionally talented young girl with a very sensitive drawing and painting style.”
Hayley, who hopes to go on to study art, was inspired by seeing a painting of an art canvas being ripped open and adapted the concept to show a friend in a similar scene.
Her striking portrait was called See Through and earned her a cash prize of £100.
Second prize of £60 went to Jozette Allan, also of St Paul’s Academy, for her series of intricate portraits 3 Friends in Miniature.
Third prize of £40 was won by Harris Academy pupil, Julia Lyall for her landscape piece Hermitage.
Commendations were awarded to Ruth McLaren, Harris Academy; Callum Fowlie, Menzieshill High; Nicola Rae, Morgan Academy; Rebekah Hanton, St Paul’s Academy; and Katie Stott, St Paul’s Academy.
An exhibition of work from all 30 finalists will go on display in the Creative Learning suite at McManus until September 2.
