Construction work on Dundee’s new swimming pool is ”progressing well”, according to one of the project’s leading figures.
Bob Duncan, chairman of Leisure and Culture Dundee, says the vision behind the ”iconic” new Olympia is becoming a reality and expects people to be enjoying the centre ”very soon”.
It comes following a visit by members of the project board to the East Whale Lane site this week, which gave councillors their first detailed look of the £31.5 million building as construction enters its final phase.
The pool was meant to have opened this year, but the schedule has slipped to early in 2013.
Mr Duncan said: ”Members of the project board took the opportunity this week to see for themselves the progress on the new Olympia. I am delighted to say that things are really shaping up well.
”It is becoming so much clearer where all the facilities will be and how they will fit in to what is already an iconic building on a prominent city site.
”Work is continuing to progress and very soon the people of Dundee will have a brand new swimming pool and associated facilities to enjoy.”
Once completed, the new centre will feature a 50-metre swimming pool, a wave pool, a rapid river, a dive pool and flumes, as well as a fitness suite and a cafe.
Linked to the complex will be a multi-storey car park with spaces for 500 vehicles and on the ground floor of the car park will be a 650 square metre retail unit.
