Lorry driver helped to safety after load catches fire on Tay bridge
ByNews reporter
A lorry carrying hay burst into flames on the Tay Road Bridge on Sunday night.
The vehicle was being driven towards Dundee when the driver noticed smoke coming from behind his cabin about 9.35pm.
He looked more closely and found that his load of hay was on fire.
The driver contacted the fire brigade, and units from Fife and Tayside services rushed to the scene.
Seeing that the vehicle was still capable of being driven and not wanting to tackle the outbreak on the bridge, they told the driver to head across to Dundee while they followed him keeping a close watch on the blazing hay in case it got out of control.
They escorted the lorry to East Camperdown Street next to the harbour where they trained hose reels on the outbreak.
The fire service called out an emergency team from Dundee City Council to help remove the burning hay from the back of the lorry.
No one was injured in the incident and the fire service said it was not necessary to close the bridge.
