A Dundee MP has called on politicians to unite in taking action to bring down fuel prices.
Stewart Hosie, MP for Dundee East, has urged fellow members to ease the burden on motorists ahead of a debate at Westminster today.
The half-day debate will give MPs their only chance to discuss fuel prices ahead of next month’s Budget and the planned fuel duty increase in April.
It comes as The Courier’s campaign to have the government introduce a fuel duty regulator continues to gather momentum, with over 5000 people having signed our petition.
Over the past few weeks residents and businesses across Courier country have told us of the difficulties they have been experiencing, with a litre of petrol almost hitting the £1.30 mark in many areas, and diesel already beyond that.
Mr Hosie believes now is the time for politicians to register their unhappiness at the situation, saying, “Scottish MPs must rise above party politics and unite to demand action.
“A fuel duty regulator, which the Tories supported before the election, would bring duty down when oil prices go up.
“Cutting fuel by 10p per litre in Scotland would only cost about half of the estimated £1bn in extra revenue the Treasury is set to rake in as a result of rising oil prices.”
