The woman who died in the house fire at Baldovan Terrace in the Stobswell area of Dundee on Sunday has been named as Monica Robertson.
The 56-year-old wheelchair user was dragged from her burning flat by firefighters and rushed to Ninewells Hospital but later died of her injuries. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
A neighbour said, “It was awful just standing and watching. People were screaming, ‘She is disabled, she is disabled,’ and we knew that even an able-bodied person wasn’t going to get out of there.”
Scott Cruickshank was trapped in his top-floor flat with his 13-year-old daughter Kirsty as the fire spread below.
He said, “If somebody had tried to get down the stairs then they wouldn’t have been able to do it as the smoke had filled the landing and it was that thick.
“We just stayed in here and opened the windows… I couldn’t believe how black it was (in the close). It is a shame I can’t believe what has happened.”
Fire station manager Fraser Scott said investigations are under way. “There is no indication that there were suspicious circumstances surrounding the outbreak and there was a smoke detector in the flat,” he said.
