Dundee College has confirmed that its NC and HNC music courses are under threat as part of its budget drive.
The college has said it needs to make savings of £4 million, largely because of a cut in its grant from the Scottish Funding Council, which distributes public money to the higher and further education sectors.
Last week it emerged that music courses were in the line of fire, prompting an angry response from students.
The full list of the courses under threat has now been released: NC music HNC music NQ video and audio HNC/D technical support NC media HNC media analysis HNC/D 3D design HNC/D visual communication HNC human resources management Postgraduate diploma in human resources management NQ law and public administration HNC/D legal services HNC police studies HNC diagnostic imaging and NQ science.
A college spokesman said, “Final decisions regarding whether these courses run or not will not be taken until April. However, in the meantime we want to ensure that applicants are made fully aware of the situation and have time to consider their options.
“We have suspended online applications to these programmes for the time being and no new applications will be accepted. We will be writing to all those who have already applied to these courses advising them of the situation and suggesting that, at this stage, they consider alternative course choices.
“Existing students aspiring to progress from NC/NQ level study with the college this year to a related HN programme will also be given advice regarding their progression options. All other full-time courses are not affected by this review and are planned to run as normal.”
The college has already begun a voluntary severance programme for staff. Management have said no target has been set for the number to go, although staff sources suggest around 100 posts may be affected.
