A 69-year-old woman with dementia and her 33-year-old son fled their home in the early hours of this morning when a fire that started in the bathroom ripped through the roof space.
Ann and Geoff Brash escaped uninjured from their home at 37 Orchard Court, Dalclaverhouse.
The woman’s husband, Robert Brash (71), rushed home from his job as a night security officer at Dundee Airport when he was alerted to the blaze shortly after midnight.
Taking shelter with his family in a neighbour’s house while four fire crews battled to control the blaze, Mr Brash snr said, “We are insured. It’s a nuisance, but we are just lucky that nobody was hurt.”
He said his wife was having a bath when the fire started.
Mr Brash continued, “My son had to go and get her out of the bathroom. She didn’t realise the danger she was in. Her dementia means she has no concept of danger.”
Station manager Fraser Scott from Macalpine Road fire station said neighbouring properties were evacuated, but firefighters had managed to prevent the flames from spreading to the adjacent homes. He said the family was alerted by a working smoke detector.
An ambulance crew checked Mrs Brash and her son, but they did not require hospital treatment.
