Originally from Cheltenham, he graduated in medicine from Queen’s College, Dundee. After a brief spell in general practice near Hull, he returned to Dundee to study public health and made that his career. He left the city in the mid-1950s, eventually settling in Nottinghamshire. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Benzies, who is from Coupar Angus, and three sons.
