Rogue workmen could be to blame for an overflowing drain in Broughty Ferry.
Council workers discovered surplus concrete in the gullies during their investigation into blocked drains at Fintry Place, near Blake Place, and at Cedar Road, near Forthill Road.
A Dundee City Council spokesman said, “The drain at Cedar Road has been unblocked. Two new gullies are being installed at Fintry Place after workmen found a build-up of concrete.”
Excess water and human waste erupt from the Fintry Place and Cedar Road drains whenever there is persistent heavy rain.
Ferry councillor Derek Scott, who raised the problem with the city development department after fears the ongoing problem could create a health risk, said, “I can’t believe that has been the cause of this problem the whole time.
“I’m surprised and shocked that anyone would pour concrete down the drain especially given the effect it’s had. I would urge people not do dispose of concrete in this way in future.”
Fintry Place resident Beth Boylen is hopeful new gullies will be an end to the problem.
Mrs Boylen, who works in preventive medicine, said, “I’m delighted work is finally going ahead. I’ve lived here for 20 years and we’ve never had it like this before.
“It all started around May. My plumbing became very sluggish whenever it rained heavily it wouldn’t drain properly but would return to normal once the flood waters receded.
“My neighbours all experienced similar problems. I’m pleased something is being done. It’s just a pity it had to get so bad before something was done.”
Fellow Ferry councillor Laurie Bidwell, who has also raised concerns about the problem, added, “I’m pleased the council have responded quickly and discovered the source of the difficulty. I hope the next downpour gives us the proof this problem is sorted once and for all.”
