Abertay students gain help in reclaiming unlawful fees
ByThe Courier Reporter
Abertay University has launched a campaign aimed at encouraging students to reclaim unlawful fees charged by letting agencies and landlords.
The initiative is led by the students’ association and supported by Shelter Scotland. Abertay University student Christy McLaughlin reclaimed £75 with the backing of the campaign.
He said: “I came across the toolkit by chance and never realised this charge was illegal. The process was simple to use and took no time at all.
“My money came back within a month and there was little resistance from my letting agent.”
Housing charity Shelter Scotland is backing the students’ stand against unlawful fees.
Director Graeme Brown said: “When money is tight which is experienced by most students you don’t need unscrupulous letting agents ripping you off while trying to find affordable accommodation.”
