Work has started on the Asda superstore at Kingsway West in Dundee.
The project will involve extensive upgrades to roads in the area, including the Myrekirk roundabout.
Demolition crews moved in to clear out the existing buildings at the Wester Gourdie site that will house the £24 million supermarket, which is projected to open next summer.
The 52,000 sq ft store, on the site of the former NCR factory on the junction of Kingsway and Myrekirk Road, will create up to 500 jobs for the area.
Once the existing buildings are demolished, developer Macdonald Estates plans to make upgrades to the roads around the site before starting construction on the store itself next spring.
Project director Stewart McPhail said: ”We started demolition at the furthest point from the Kingsway to minimise disruption, and we expect that to be complete by October.
”The next step is we have to upgrade the roundabout on Myrekirk Road, and we’re finalising detailed designs with the council and the roads authority for that.
”We’ll be increasing the size of the roundabout and introducing a signal, which solves a huge problem that the city council have had with that roundabout. The traffic flow through it will be dramatically better than it is at the moment.
”We’re also looking at improving Myrekirk Road north and south of the Kingsway to improve traffic flow there.”
A spokeswoman for Asda said: ”Macdonald Estates has begun work on the demolition of the existing buildings prior to undertaking the necessary roadworks required for the store.
”Asda is looking forward to starting work on the store in the spring of next year and are working towards welcoming customers to the new store in the summer of 2013.”
