One final push is needed to return Dundee’s Magdalen Green bandstand to its former glory.

The 1890s landmark is immortalised in the paintings of James McIntosh Patrick, but its condition has deteriorated.

Now campaigners behind the regeneration of the Green are hoping that proud West End residents will pledge up to £2,000 to become bandstand “champions”.

The Friends of Magdalen Green recently completed the successful revamp of the popular Roseangle playpark, raising £160,000 to create giant climbing frames and slides.

The project was always in two parts, however, and for the last year they have been raising funds to repair the bandstand.

It was extensively renovated as recently as 1990, but now needs further work to ensure its survival for the next century.

That work is estimated to cost £70,000, but with the support of Dundee City Council and other partners the Friends are nearly there.

They hope to take the final step and secure a final £7.500 to make the project a reality and return vibrancy to the area with a “champions” initiative.

A spokesman said: “We are looking for local champions who, like us, love the bandstand and want to see it restored to its former glory and become a well-used community asset.

“In return for donations, the names of individuals or companies will be listed on a supporters’ sign that will be erected near the bandstand for 12 months following the repair work.”

In a fashion now made commonplace by Kickstarter, the Friends are appealing for one top level “Platinum Champion” willing to donate £2,000.

They are also looking for five “Gold” champions to donate £500 apiece and 10 “Silver” champions willing to contribute £300 each.

The money will enable the Friends to repair parts of the wrought ironwork that have begun to degrade, repaint the bandstand to protect it from the elements and add electricity.
