Rangers fans’ outrage over Ibrox disaster post on Twitter
ByStefan Morkis
A Dundee United fan could be reported to police after mocking victims of the Ibrox disaster in 1971 online.
A tweet saying Ibrox was half-empty during Tuesday’s League Cup match with St Johnstone because fans “have had great difficulty using the stairs again” appeared under the user’s profile.
The tweet was accompanied by an image of a newspaper front page reporting the 1971 disaster which saw 66 fans die and 200 more injured because of a crush on a stairway as supporters tried to leave the stadium.
On one Rangers’ supporters forum, outraged supporters encouraged people to complain to the user’s employer and even to report him to the police.
However, Police Scotland has not yet received an official complaint about the message.
We tried to contact the user under whose profile the message was posted, but we received no reply.
The user, believed to be a Dundee United fan, later locked and then deleted his Twitter and Facebook accounts.
