Prominent volunteer Katherine “Kerry” Maclean has died aged 71.
After her early retiral from primary teaching she volunteered to work with Citizens’ Advice, then as a meeter-greeter at King’s Cross Health and Community Care Centre, Dundee, and finally with Action On Hearing Loss, where she worked on the Hear To Help (H2H) campaign.
She developed a flair for the work and was soon heading up the Dundee volunteer team, servicing hearing aids.
She also worked in the Arbroath H2H drop-in, the frequency of which had to be increased from monthly to fortnightly, prompting the establishment of an Angus team to cover the county.
The charity made her its Volunteer of the Year for 2014, and many other citizens knew her from the annual Festival of Remembrance, when she sold tickets at the pre-event reception in the City Chambers for some years.
Before retiring and becoming a volunteer, she taught in primary schools in Dundee, starting in West March in Kirkton, when marriage brought her to the city in 1968.
After her children went to school she returned to the profession in supply posts, including spells in Clepington and Rosebank, before spending the last 15 years at Craigiebarns.
She is survived by her husband Alasdair, a former advertising features writer for The Evening Telegraph, her son Fergus and daughter-in-law Pamela in Broughty Ferry, her daughter Deirdre and son-in-law Mark in California and five grandchildren Adam, Alex and Ruairi in Dundee, and Beth and Bridget in the United States.
