Emergency services were called to the Tay Rail Bridge after a train driver reported a body on the track at 8.40 this morning.

However, police discovered the man on the tracks was alive and had not been struck by a train as originally feared.

The man was conscious and talking to officers before being taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for further assessment.

Train services to and from Fife were delayed while British Transport Police dealt with the incident this morning.

Passengers stuck at Dundee train station were initially told there had been a fatality on the track but Police Scotland confirmed a short time later this was not the case and simply a result of the train driver’s initial call.

It was feared there would be no trains between Leuchars and Dundee until 11am but the line was reopened around 10.10am after the man was taken down from the bridge.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said the man did appear to have any physical injuries.

He said: “We received a call about 8.40 this morning when it was reported there was someone on the tracks near Dundee station.

“Alongside our colleagues with Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service we discovered a man on the tracks.

“He has since been taken to Ninewells Hospital.

“The line was handed back at 10am.”
