Staffies the breed most likely to end up on death row in Dundee kennels

Staffordshire terriers top the list of breeds destroyed after being found abandoned in Dundee over the last five years.

Of the more than 1500 dogs found roaming Dundee by the council since 2010, 118 had to be put down after no owner could be found.

Dundee City Council’s Brown Street Kennels cares for lost or abandoned dogs and seeks to re-home them.

While the figures show the large majority of dogs are eventually rehomed, for some time eventually runs out.

Staffies were the most common breed that had to be put down, with 24, with cross-Staffies the second largest on 18, and collies third with 11.

This year marked a five-year low for dog deaths with 14 put down compared to 27 in 2013.

The figures were obtained under a freedom of information request.
