City Quay residents face ‘nightmare’ four-month road closure

Road closures look set to affect City Quay.

Residents at Dundee’s City Quay development are facing a four-month “nightmare” road closure.

South Victoria Dock Road, a key access route to hundreds of flats, will be closed for 16 weeks of drainage work.

The closure means the only access to the flats will be along West Victoria Dock Road from East Dock Street.

One resident, Vikki Nye, said that the road closure would leave her “totally isolated” in her flat.

The 23-year-old said: “This is going to be an absolute nightmare.

“South Victoria Dock Road is the only lifeline to our flat. I don’t know how people are going to manage getting to and from work on time, or even just nipping over to the shops.

“We’re totally isolated with that road shut off. It was bad enough during the Commonwealth Games, when West Victoria Dock Road was closed, but this is directly outside our front door.

“It will certainly cause delays and frustration, especially given it is going on for such a long time.

“I’m sure the work is necessary, but I really wish they had thought of a better way to organise it that didn’t leave us without access to the main road.”

It is understood a letter has been sent out informing residents of the planned closure, which will begin on January 20.

The work forms part of the ongoing reconstruction of the roads network at Dundee Waterfront.

City Quay has previously been hit with controversial road closures.

West Victoria Dock Road was sealed off with concrete blocks, steel fences and CCTV units during the Commonwealth Games last summer.

Residents were left frustrated at the closure, while local businesses, including the Blue Marlin seafood restaurant, which recently closed, also suffered.

One of Dundee’s historic landmarks, the Unicorn, also endured a substantial drop in visitors as a result of the security arrangements.
