Goodness, gracious, great balls of… ice? How did these wash up on Broughty Ferry beach?
ByStefan Morkis
Dozens of large balls have ice have washed up on Broughty Ferry beach.
This amazing photograph was sent in by Courier reader Moira Preston this morning.
Last year similiar balls were found in Lake Michigan – which, unlike the Tay, is fresh water – and were caused by large sheets of ice breaking up and the smaller pieces rubbing together to form rought spheres.
However, it is not known how these icy orbs were created.
When similar orbs have washed up on beaches it has been suggested they are formed when water freezes when waves hit the shore.
As more waves come in and out, the ice builds up and is rolled into a ball.
If you know what created the frozen balls email The Courier.
