A teenager has been reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with an offensive comment posted on Twitter about the late Dundee United owner and chairman Eddie Thompson.
The 17-year-old was spoken to by police after the tweet appeared on the internet last Monday evening purporting to come from a man claiming to be from the Aberdeen area.
After the tweet was published, the user received a number of replies from angry Dundee United fans.
An apology was posted 15 minutes later, followed by a post claiming a friend had hacked the page.
Mark McMahon, secretary of the Federation of Dundee United Supporters Clubs, said: “I don’t think in any circumstances comments like that are acceptable.
“I would hope it’s a very, very small minority of people who make these comments and I think there’s normally a healthy rivalry between both Dundee clubs and Aberdeen.
“There’s a great history that stems back to the ’80s and the creation of the New Firm, but unfortunately there have been incidents where it has been taken too far.”
A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that a 17-year-old man has been reported to the procurator fiscal in relation to an offensive tweet about the late Dundee United chairman Eddie Thompson.”
