A Dundee man fractured a party-goer’s jaw with a punch during a fight after an 18th birthday celebration.
James Anderson, 27, of Pitkerro Road, and his victim, John Cruickshank, had both been at the party in the Ambassador bar on Clepington Road shortly before the incident.
Dundee Sheriff Court heard the party had finished and guests were standing outside the pub when the events leading to the fight started.
Depute fiscal Vicki Bell said: “An altercation occurred between the accused and a witness, which resulted in the witness punching the accused on the head.
“Other people became involved and they moved around a corner and into Balgray Place.
“There were numerous people arguing and shouting and gesticulating to fight with each other following the initial disturbance, which resulted in more people becoming involved.
“The accused was seen and heard to challenge the witness by shouting. The witness was being held back and kept apart from the accused.”
At that point Mr Cruickshank came out of the pub and observed the altercation.
Ms Bell continued: “He (Mr Cruickshank) then ran towards the incident in the direction of the accused.
“As he approached the accused from behind, the accused turned around and punched him once on the face, which caused him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness.”
Mr Cruickshank was helped to his feet and taken home, but awoke the following day with “considerable pain” in his jaw.
He was taken to Ninewells Hospital and x-rays showed that his jaw was fractured in two places.
The court heard Mr Cruickshank now hesitates to go out socially and tends to avoid big crowds.
Anderson admitted that, on August 17 2013, he assaulted John Cruickshank by punching him on the head and rendering him unconscious to his severe injury.
Sentence was deferred to February 10.
