A woman and her child passenger have had a miraculous escape from a spectacular car crash on Clepington Road in Dundee.
The woman was taken to Ninewells Hospital with minor back and shoulder injuries after the black Volkswagen hatchback she was driving collided with a bus stop sign near the junction of Glenprosen Terrace shortly after 4pm on Friday.
She had to be helped from the car which flipped on to its side and was severely damaged in the smash by a combination of firefighters, who also helped stabilise the vehicle, and ambulance staff.
The young female passenger managed to climb free from the wreckage before the emergency services arrived.
The bus stop was broken in two and left strewn across Glenprosen Terrace as people gathered to survey the scene in the immediate aftermath of the accident.
Clare McDonald (60) called the emergency services after hearing the crash outside her home in Clepington Road.
She said, “I just heard the bang and the girl screaming and I came in and phoned the police.
“It was just so awful and so quick. If I expected to see an accident here it would be a car coming out of Soutar Street because some people are impatient there.”
Retired Mrs McDonald said another potential tragedy could have taken place if anyone had been waiting at the bus stop, where a popular service to Ninewells was due to arrive.
“It’s just dreadful really,” she added.
“My husband and I thought it was really lucky that no one was standing at the bus stop because the number 14 was due.
“One lady said to me she went round the corner and saw it if she had been a few minutes earlier she could have been hit.”
Clepington Road was closed to traffic between Hospital Street and Johnston Avenue after the crash, with the stretch between Hospital Street and Soutar Street reopening at 4.50pm.
The whole road was reopened at 6.40pm after the car and damaged bus stop had been removed.
Roy Dunsire is Tayside Fire and Rescue station manager at Blackness Road and he said, “One female occupant was trapped within the vehicle by the way it was positioned.
“We were assisting her out the vehicle with the assistance of the ambulance service.
“There were two people in the car, a woman and a child, and the child had managed to escape from the car.
“It was a joint effort from the fire service, ambulance service and police to section off the road and remove the casualty from the vehicle.”
