New businesses in Broughty Ferry have been denied the chance to stay open later after a review by the city council.
The licensing committee looked into the matter following a clamour from some food outlets to be able to stay open past 1am on Friday and Saturday nights and midnight from Sunday to Thursday.
One of the most recent to apply for later opening hours without success was Subway on Brook Street.
A handful of businesses have “grandfather rights” that pre-date new licensing laws and can stay open until 2am on weekends, but the rest, like Subway, are denied that right.
Following a review, members of Dundee City Council’s licensing committee agreed to keep the opening times as they were.
Ferry councillor Laurie Bidwell revealed he was happy with the outcome.
He said: “Surely midnight Sundays to Thursdays and 1am on Friday and Saturday is late enough?
“Firstly, I think it’s largely unnecessary because the pubs and hotels with late hours liquor licenses already provide extensive on-site catering.
“Those leaving pubs at closing time don’t need to look for a takeaway on their way home because there has been food available all night.
“Secondly, in Broughty Ferry, it is indisputable that a significant number of residents live in the main commercial streets and recognised that hot food takeaways lead to people lingering in the street, causing noise and nuisance.”
Subway said: “We were disappointed with the council’s verdict, as there is consumer demand for longer opening hours.”
