A Dundee man stranded in Austria after flights were suspended has been given a parking ticket for leaving his car too long at Edinburgh Airport.
Health and safety manager Dave Hanlon (52) and wife Lyn travelled by coach, ferry and rail to make it back to the UK after their flight from Salzburg was cancelled last week.
However when they finally made it back to Edinburgh Airport on Saturday afternoon less than a day after their ticket ran out they discovered NCP had charged for the extra time their car had been in the long-stay car park.
Mr Hanlon said, “It is just outrageous I couldn’t believe it.
“The money is not the issue it is the principle.”
The Hanlons were able to get a bus from Salzburg to Calais and sailed home from there.
Mr Hanlon added, “We then had to go through London carrying all of our ski equipment and get a train back to Edinburgh.
“We got back to the car park about 2 on Saturday afternoon.Apologetic”The car was meant to be out at six on the Friday but we were charged another £8.20 for the extra day.
“The woman was apologetic but said there was nothing they could do. It’s just ripping people off.
“It is a pre-payment car park and we had to give them our phone number when we were booking it so they could easily have phoned us.”
We asked NCP for comment but got no answer.
Other airport car park operators have taken a more lenient view on vehicles left in car parks.
A BAA spokesman said customers will not be charged for the extra time they are left in their own car parks.
“We are certainly not charging any extra.
“People will be charged for the time they have booked, not any more.”
