The alarm was raised at lunchtime on Saturday as the vehicle was said to have been passing through the busy Gray Street crossing. Emergency services remained there for much of the day. It is understood that, although the barrier was damaged, the railway line remained operational. Shopkeepers on Gray Street described hearing a loud bang at lunchtime on Saturday. Anne Doig, of Peter Gray Carpets, said: “I didn’t see it but I heard an almighty bang and I thought there had been a massive car crash or something. “Police were here most of the afternoon.” The incident comes just weeks after the Gray Street level crossing was named the most dangerous in Scotland.
