The family of Dundee footballer Peter McAvoy have thanked everyone who has helped them smash the target they set for fundraising in his memory.
The 22-year-old, who was at college in America, died in April from a heart condition.
A campaign was launched to raise £4,444.23 for the British Heart Foundation reflecting his shirt number of 4 and the age he would have been next month but the sum collected is now £10,000.
Anne McCallum, partner of Pete’s father, also named Peter, said: “It’s been going really well.
“The British Heart Foundation will be getting the £4,444.23 and Peter has been in contact with the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity.
“He wants to create a trust fund so hundreds of young people in Dundee can get their hearts checked every year.”
Anne said the family had been overwhelmed by the response to the tragedy.
“It’s something myself and Peter have really found comforting. All the messages and photos really give us a boost.
“We didn’t know how popular a lad he was and the impact he had on so many people is astonishing.
“People have been so generous and it’s incredible how Pete’s friends have given up time and cash to help out.”
Celebrities and footballers have taken to social media to support the campaign, including World Cup winner Toni Kroos.
