Housing association launches £500,000 fire damage action against scrap merchants
ByThe Courier Reporter
A Dundee housing association is suing a city scrap merchants for more than £500,000 following a massive blaze which left six homes in ruins.
Seventy residents were forced to flee their homes during the fire on Scott Street in May 2010.
The incident started at the Henderson Kerr Ltd on Paterson Street before spreading to the housing area on Scott Street.
Now, Hillcrest Housing Association is pursuing a figure believed to be in the region of £500,000 at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, over the 13 flats that had to be gutted.
No one was injured but a number of homes were left uninhabitable and some residents were forced to find other accommodation.
The fire was caused by a pile of cars and old skips at the yard and destroyed the homes which were part of a £4.2 million scheme to transform the mill into low-rent accommodation.
Since the blaze, the Henderson Kerr Yard has changed owners and is operated by European Metal Recycling.
Both Hillcrest and Henderson Kerr declined to comment on the case.
