A new sculpture paying tribute to Dundee’s jute heritage has been unveiled in Lochee.
A sculpture of the ‘Jute Mill Woman’ was revealed in the community park on the corner of Bank Street.
The sculpture brings an end to nine years of tireless campaigning for local woman Stella Carrington, 76, who is delighted to finally see the sculpture come to life.
The model of the woman was actually modelled on Stella.
She said: “It’s a dream come true to see this sculpture up in Lochee I never thought I would see the day. It took quite a while, and a lot of help from different people to get everything in place.
“As a former weaver myself, it carries a lot of emotional ties. It’s something I am very proud of.”
John Gray, planning officer for Dundee City Council, said: “Every bit of credit should go towards Stella who really wanted something like this for many years.
“It’s very satisfying to finally see the sculpture in its full splendour after the countless discussions which took place to get to this point.
“I hope it becomes symbolic for the area and gives the people of Lochee something that uplifts and inspires them to be proud of their heritage and proud of their community.”
