Rush hour motorists crawled across the Tay Road Bridge as they were caught in the start of major road works on Tuesday.
Both north and south bound traffic were reduced to one lane due to advance works to the Bridgehead roundabout at the Fife end of the bridge.
The works will last for three days and are only the start as essential maintenance works are to be carried out to the carriageway and expansion joints of the bridge from next week.
A man travelling home to Fife said: “The queues lasted around 20 minutes. There were tailbacks on both slipways leading onto the bridge and you could see people were starting to get frustrated. “Because the right-hand lane was closed at the Fife side roundabout traffic was bottlenecking as you came off the bridge.
“We were down to three miles an hour all the way across and plenty of people tried to cut in ahead of us.”
After the huge number of motorists who used the bridge travelling to the Ryder Cup, the Tay Road Bridge Joint Board announced yesterday it was postponing works to limit the impact on visitors to the Dunhill Cup, being played at St. Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.
The works will now take place over the weekends of October 10, 17 and 24 from Friday at 7.30pm to Monday at 6am.
A contra-flow system will be in place with a 30mph speed limit so that one full carriageway can be closed.
A Dundee City Council spokesperson said: “A temporary 30mph speed restriction will be applied across the bridge during the working programme.
“The main works will mean that there will be temporary restrictions on the B946 link road to Newport and Tayport, but diversions will be in place.”
Abnormal and wide loads will not be allowed to cross the bridge during the works, while cyclists can only use the shared central walkway/cycle track.
Advance enabling works to the Bridgehead roundabout will finish on Thursday.
